Witch Creek January Report
The first month of racing is now over and the racing world is careening forward into February Week One as we speak. Witch Creek's start to the year had its ups and downs, but mostly ups. Everyone in the racing world is realizing that the scene is becoming a lot tougher with the addition of several stables to the top ranks and a bunch of newer stables too.
The month of January saw seven Witch Creek trained juveniles take down their maiden races. Among the winners are the highly anticipated Kismet, the impressive Breaking Point, beautifully bred Shatter, Witch Creek's half-sibling to El Sol Del Mar, Luna de Soltera, Ashanti's final son, Cascabel and North Diamond Manner's Eternally Smoldering--a Witch Creekbred horse by DW Flamekissed, out of Dazzling Dame.
Witch Creek runners stormed out of the gate with Spotlight Pride notching the Dubai World Mile over future Hall of Famer Ventura and Miss Josephine taking down her thirteenth victory enroute to becoming a grade one racehorse. Josey finished second in her first attempt at a HOTY race and is expected to make a run at the top turf distaff races all season.
Everyone's favorite racehorse, Sun King, started his season with a second place finish in the Dubai World Sprint, but ended January on a good note with a sterling victory in the Unicorn Horn Dirt Mile. He is expected to run in the Spring Dawn Treader Cup in February Week Two as a precursor to a campaign mostly focused on nine and ten furlong races.
Artemis' Glory continued her onslaught of the turf sprinter division with a strong win in the Crystal Sprint over some key rivals. The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner as never looked stronger and is expected to get better with age.
In the older horse division, several roster members earned key victories. Those horses include Proteus Prince, Nocturnal Runaway and Radiation Therapy. While all three are still grade three runners, they're starting to knock at the door and are only getting better with age. Look for them come February to continue their ascension in the older ranks.
